Are You Having Trouble Letting Go?

A Guide on Letting Go and the Law of Attraction

Letting go is necessary to making the Law of Attraction work.

The Law of Attraction isn’t just a bunch of steps that you follow. It isn’t thinking positively and visualizing 10 minutes a day. It isn’t writing affirmations 15 times each every day.

The Law of Attraction is a way of life…and letting go is a part of it.

Where Most People Struggle with Letting Go

Many people jump into the Law of Attraction and fully commit to using it…for a few days. They expect to see results instantly.

But within a week, they start thinking negatively, wondering why they aren’t seeing results, wondering what they’re doing wrong… Feelings of desperation, hopelessness, doubt, and fear creep in.

They’ll go back and try some more with the Law of Attraction, alternating between hoping to see results and moments of negativity, fear and doubt.

They’re so attached to their desire that they forget to let go.

What is Letting Go?

Letting go is being detached from the outcome.

Letting go isn’t that you stop asking.

Letting go is getting out of your own way and allowing the Law of Attraction to bring you your desire. You release all emotional attachments, negative thoughts, and tension in your body. You are content with your life and know that your desire is coming to you.

How to Let Go

Letting go is unlearning what you’ve learned since childhood. It’s no longer worrying about your family, your job, your house, your relationship, your health, and everything else in your life.

Everything in your life that you want to change, everywhere you think you need to compete with others, everywhere you think you need to be the best, stop worrying about it.

The more you worry about them, the more problems you attract.

When you release all worry and trust in the Universe (or Source or God, if you prefer), you will find true abundance, joy, health, love, success, and prosperity. You will achieve vibrational alignment with your desires.

Letting go involves changing how you think. Instead of going through life focused on the physical world around you, you focus on your spirit.

You release all control and remain open to possibilities. You allow things to happen in your life easily and naturally.

Using Letting Go in Your Daily Law of Attraction Routine

I want to share with you a question I received from someone on using letting go with visualization. I think you’ll find that it addresses many common problems with and misunderstandings about how letting go works.


Question: I know the LOA says when you want to manifest a specific person you have to be willing to lose them – you have to let go and be ok with not being with them in order to manifest the relationship you want. It also says that you should visualize the relationship you want with this person as if you already have it. How can one do both? How can I imagine being in a relationship with this person but let them go and be ok with not the being with them at the same time?

My Answer: Visualization and letting go are two entirely different things.

Visualization activates the Law of Attraction, sending a powerful message about what you want to manifest. After you do your visualization, you go about your day normally. You act as if your life is as you visualized. You don’t try to control the outcome. You don’t worry about how it’s going to happen, what he is or isn’t doing, whether the Law of Attraction is working, etc. You release all fear and doubt. You just trust that everything is okay and whatever happens will be okay too. This is letting go. It’s being detached from the outcome. It isn’t that you stop asking.

When you let go, you think about your desire happily, but you don’t worry about it manifesting. If you are worried, you’re focused on it not happening, which is sending a powerful message to the Universe to create the situation you’re worried about.


How will Letting Go Work for You?

If you’ve followed every step of the Law of Attraction and you still haven’t manifest your desire…

If you’ve tried thinking positively and the Law of Attraction still isn’t working…

If you believe your desire will manifest and you’re just not seeing it happen…

Let go. Positive change is on its way.

    • I am having a hard time letting go, or allowing. I feel like I’m in so deeply at this point that it is difficult to detach from any feelings attached to the outcome. I also feel like that is the thing holding me back. I have asked for many signs and when I got them they were all positive. I know the thing that I want (a relationship with a specific person) is mine and on its way to me if only I would allow it. Any advice you could give me on being better at letting go. I would appreciate it.

      • As long as you think something is holding you back, you are going to be held back. Begin with that and apply the tips in this article. Don’t just read them, apply them. You can also search this site for articles on overcoming resistance and on resolving limiting beliefs.

          I really want her ,and i am using loa to get her.but i dont know whats going wrong with me but i cant get her.now she is shifting so i really want your help to get her back.its been 6 months since i am using loa,but i am not getting the proper result.please help me .i really want her.

    • Hi Ann – It can still work for you. Remember you create your reality. Focus on seeing the world the way you want it to be. Allow it to reshape itself to align with your beliefs.

    • Hi Ann, I strongly recommend you reread chapters 1, 2, 3, 7 and 9 of my book. Right now, you’re only creating more missing him, more pain, and more wanting him back. Reread those chapters and I think you’ll understand what is going on and what you need to do.

    Thanks for putting together such great posts and kindle books! It has given me a different perspective on things. I am trying to rekindle my relationship with my ex, but there are days when I am really hopeful and positive and others when all is dark. He is moving away to another continent and says that moving forward and far helps me get over our relationship which hurts. He seems eager and happy with his new life and has said he would never very go backwards or start a relationship with me again. He is looking forward to new adventures. We broke up because of misunderstandings but never because of anything major. Any tips about how to keep positive and manifesting when I am in intense emotional and almost physical pain? I feel I am almost going into a depression and cry almost 24/7 and have been for weeks. How do I keep positive when I can’t stop crying and everything hurts? I know you are not a coach and it might be unfair for me to ask you that, but if you have any tips that can help me get out of this horrible dark hole. Nothing seems to help and I am worried about my sanity…Thanks

    • Hi Fiona – I understand things aren’t easy for you. *hug* It sounds like you may already be suffering from depression. I highly recommend you seek professional counseling. They can give you the tools to stop crying and get out of the dark hold you describe. Afterwards, we can work on producing change with the Law of Attraction.

  7. Hi elizabeth,

    I bought your book today and i have to say it is a great read and i have started to apply your methods to my life already. I broke up with my ex in august, we were both over in abroad together, we were engaged to be married and everything. But due to a bad break up, she decided to end it with me, i tried and tried to fix my relationship , but gave up because she didnt want it anymore, so i left and returned home, she is still abroad and isnt sure whether or not she wants to come home. I have had very little contact with her in the past month. But my question is, if i follow the guidelines of your book and work with the tecniques that you have given, so that she will return home to me so that we can be happy again, if i am sending out what i want to the universe, and vizualizing us being back together, how would it work if she wants to stay there and doesnt want to come back? How would my wanting and my vizualizations, make her want me again?

    • Hi Eddie – Don’t worry about how it will happen. It’s up to the Universe to take care of how it happens. Your job is simply to allow it to happen. If you’re worrying about the how, you’re not allowing.

I am confused, because we never really dated, we were best friends, however due to my fears I stopped talking to him for 2 months and then 3 months. When i started talking again, he was dating. Now I am working with the LOA and he is responding to me. Should I let go again and don’t speak to him for 3 weeks since he is dating someone? I am certain 1000% he is my soulmate. Your book has helped me so much with my self – asteem. Thank you!

    • Hi Gianna – You should let go of your attachment with him, but it’s okay to speak to him. You’ve only ever been friends. I’m glad my book helped your self-esteem!

    Im sorry for the constant messages i just have 1 more question. Will this work for me, by fully applying these techniques even if my ex has told me that she is happy now and moving on. She told me that she is out having fun alot now and that of course she still thinks of me from time to time but she hasn’t had the time to miss me because she has been keeping so busy, she also said she isnt sure in her mind anymore that she has any love for me anymore.. Like i said in a previous comment our break up was bitter, do you think by just letting her go completely, getting on with my life, having fun and knowing that i want her and love her that the universe will bring both of us back together again someday? How long do you think this could take, can it take years?

    • How long it takes depends on you. The less resistance you have, the faster it works. The more you’re in alignment with your relationship, the faster it works.

      Your comments keep indicating resistance – doubts, worry, etc. You need to overcome the resistance. You need to trust that the process works. Follow the techniques in the book to help you become the person you need to be to have the relationship you want. Become that person and the relationship will be there.

    I am still confused. You told me yesterday that I can still talk to him, even though he is currently dating someone.
    I am manifesting a relationship with him, and that he is asking me to see him again, and today in an email he told me that he wants to see me again. Does that mean that manifestation works? But should I be talking to him even though he has a girlfriend?

    • Communication usually is a first step towards creating relationship so his emailing you is a good sign. Just stay happy and in a high vibration. Stop worrying and let go of all fear and doubt.

        We never stopped emailing and he is the one who really does not want to lose me, he keeps telling me. He has also said I am the best friend he ever had, he admires and respects me like noone. He also confessed he is not thrilled with his girlfriend. But, we are friends. I know the LOA works because it has worked for me in the past and I believe in it, and I want this like nothing, but fear creeps in. Thank you so much for listening and your priceless advice :)

          • Thank you so much. I am manifesting certain situations, and he is responding back to me to each and every one. He has already asked to meet me in person, a couple of times, and I fantasized about that. I do not know the situation with the woman he claims to be dating (which lives in another country) and I am asking or talking about that. i am simply following my desires, because this is about me! so, so far, what do you think? are things looking promising?   12. Hello Elizabeth, i keep manifesting him some how but no the way i want. He keeps coming to see me but nothing else is happening, he keeps having a go at me because he thinks i am seeing someone else which im not, he says he does not care but why does he keeping arguing with me about it. Just dont understand. can you give me some advice? X

    • Ask yourself why you’re manifesting this? Do you have resistance to being with him? Are you hesitant or nervous about seeing him? Do you have any resentment? If you want to manifest something else, the change begin with you.

    I need your advice so much. I am still manifesting every day, and something is happening. He has started lately to open very much about his personal issues, which he has never done before. maybe because I am desiring Trust and Understanding, but i think he is still dating someone, even though I am not talking about that. My problem is even though I manifest, at the same time I have fear and doubt about this relationship which overwhelms me with negative thoughts. I understand the Law of Detachment, and I am trying to practice that also, and I know i have to stick to only positive thoughts….any advice for me? i would appreciate it so much

    • Please read the articles I recommended to you previously to help you overcome your fear and doubts. Follow the techniques in them. When you finally resolve your resistance, you should find it easier to let go – you might even find it happening automatically.

    I have a question. Would talking to other guys an idea of letting go? Also would it be aganist letting go if I gave my ex a card?

    • If your actions are things that you think will get him back, you haven’t let go.

      • So, basically I have to not worry about getting him back, just know that I will and let the universe do its job? and not take any action?

        • When you’re able to stop worrying and trust things will work out, you’ll have let go. It’s up to the Universe to arrange everything. You’re supposed to allow it to happen and follow any inspiration you receive.

          • I think I just realized my problem. He does have a girlfriend. We had been talking on and off for the past couple of months, but I haven’t heard from him in almost two weeks. For the past month, I have been asking the universe to send me a sign that he misses me by having a yellow car pass me (weird i know, but it was the only thing I never see) and they keep going by. I have been focusing on myself and putting all my trust into the universe because I know it will happen, but then his girlfriend pops into my mind and I get a jealous feeling. I do know that it is manifesting, a while ago, our song came on in the most randomest places, and it hasn’t been heard of in almost two years. I know he is coming back, I can feel it, its more of the negative thought creeping up of his girlfriend and I can’t seem to get rid of it.

  16. Hi Elizabeth, I am grateful I found your book and website! I am in a relationship. The man I am in a relationship with is across the country due to work. For the past several months fears and worries have crowded my mind. It has seemed as though he as gradually been pulling away. Which has made me worry more.

    Once I found your site and book, I realized that my fears, etc are probably what has been creating this. I am working on doing the steps, including letting go which is VERY hard to.

    In one chapter of your book you mention that if your vibration falls, it can take years to manifest your desire. I was wondering do you mean it can take that long to pull yourself back up?

    I have noticed that falling (so to speak) is harder to get up from than staying at a high vibration. Now I am scared that my fears, worries, etc of the past few months have created what I don’t want. Can this type of thing be overcome?

    • Your vibration can shift in but a moment. It’s as simple as doing something you enjoy: petting a cat, walking a dog, skipping, dancing, listening to music. The key is to keep raising your vibration every time it falls down, rather than wallowing in the lower vibrational energy.

  17. Hi, My boyfriend and I have been together for just over a year. In that time, he has been on TV in the UK and had a lot of attention, we worked through a lot of it and on New Years Day, he decided that things weren’t working out. He’s been struggling with a connection with us. Since we broke up I have gone radio silent. I havent contacted him and he hasn’t contacted me. I feel like I’m at a place where I can let him go. Can this work even if he wasn’t sure whether he loved me?

  18. Hi, my partner of almost 9 years ended our relationship in June 2013, leaving me and our little girl. I have tried manifesting his return but since doing so I came to understand I wasn’t truly happy with him after all. He has since admitted he had been dating someone else and their even living together, which I was obviously hurt by but not as much as I though I would be.
    5 months after the break-up I befriended a guy and we connected really well, in the short time I had known him I grew fond of him and could even say I was falling for him, he is everything I had always wanted in a guy and he said I was everything he had always wanted.

    over the festive session, I had a few issues with my ex and it got extremely difficult, I developed insecurities and a lot of anger and hurt for my exe’s behaviour and comments. I never told the new guy about any of the issues I was having purposely not to scare him away. Sadly he got wind of my issues and basically told me to get myself and my little girl sorted and wished me luck. I took it he no longer wanted to see me so took it all to heart and decided to delete his number.
    A few day’s later I had a random text just stating he felt sad about the situation and wished me all the very best with my situation and I asked I let him know if I get any joy with finding a new place for me and my little girl, I responded and said thank you, also wishing him luck with his job and said perhaps I will message him on facebook from time to time. He asked if I had deleted his number and me being honest stated yes and explained my reason for doing so. He was basically furious and stated to never contact him again as he felt everything I had said to him was lies!

    I have been beating myself up and even tried to apologise obviously fallen on death ears! The reason for my message is, I visualise us often and so many things gives me the feeling we are meant to be, I ask the universe to send me a sign if we are meant to be, but nothing except a dream stating not to contact him has come to me. When I think of him I feel full of joy, I just know he is meant to be my life partner as I never felt like this when I was with my ex. I just wanted some advise to what signs I should ask to guide me and if I am going about manifesting him back the wrong way?

  20. Sometimes, I think I see/hear signs, but am not sure if I am just romanticizing normal things. Hahaha! For example, one day I was feeling so good and someone randomnly mentioned airports to me, and I was thinking about airports a lot because my love lives overseas.

    Also, last week, I was researching material for school and stumbled across a UK site on the topic, and decided to randomnly watch a video on the site for learning purposes. The voice and accent of the interviewer (I did not see his face, he was filming) sounded SO much like my loves voice that I had to wonder if it really was him! He even explained things in a way that I can imagine my love saying, but maybe this is something that British people share? I hear a lot of English accents but this is the ONLY time I heard someone sound SO much like him. I was sort of shocked but also laughed. Do you think these are signs? I am scared to trust that they are signs, because I have so many vibrational highs and lows.

He is a very happy person, but he deserves to be with someone who makes him so so SO happy, and I WANT to do that for him. I want to return the favor, because he has changed my life and I am so lucky to have him in it.

    • You might want to go through this site and read the various articles on resistance, limiting beliefs, and gratitude.

  22. Hi, I am reading a law of attraction book at the moment. I think that the ideas that you are talking about, i.e. using law of attraction to attract a specific person, also benefit from utilising the NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) idea of ‘parts integration’. The resistance that law of attraction refers to, can be resolved, I have found, using the NLP technique of parts integration. Search/google ‘NLP’ and ‘parts integration’, (in particular, Richard Bandler, in his early books, such as the Structure of Magic, is excellent on this topic). Using parts integration, one can often discover a part of oneself which is resisting your desire to attract a specific person. This parts integration process very quickly and effectively resolves this kind of inner resistance.
    Hope that helps along with the excellence of law of attraction.

    I have read your book about attracting a specific person and it confirmed to me what I have felt must be the only logical conclusion from LOA, that it is possible. Thank you so much for writing it!

    However, I am finding it hard to understand how to let go and still believe my ex is coming back. And knowing I could stall things by not letting go seems to make it harder to let go, because apparently all is riding on whether I can do this one thing. So now I am worried about not worrying about the outcome, sigh!

    I have searched the internet for practical steps on exactly how to let go, I am also telling myself that this is easy for me, but now I am finding that I have to let go of the intense trying to let go. This is becoming so hard for me I want to leave the country for a while but then I worry about whether leaving the country would mean I have let go or whether it means I am not living as though he is already back. Even though I haven’t talked to my ex for a while I know that he loves me still, and I really do believe he wants to come back. So what is the problem? I have been able to not think about him, or worry about the outcome but then after a few days when nothing seems to have changed I start to wonder…

    I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions on what might be wrong or what I could/should do about this, and a dummies guide to how to let go.

    I discovered your site tonight while running a search for Law of Attraction. I love your site it is awesome! I am in a relationship and am learning to use LOA to make my relationship better, and the way I would like things to be. (Closer, more loving, etc.)

    I am learning a lot from your site, but am a bit confused about letting go. Is that just having faith that everything will work out the way I want it to, and just stay focused on creating things the way I want them to be?

    I have been really putting effort into focusing only on things he does that I like, rather than outer appearances or stuff that upsets me. Even if it is something that happened 6 months ago. Anytime something happens that I don’t like, I start to think about things he has done that I do like.

    There isn’t any worry, or doubt or such. But I did realize that I was focusing too much on what he wasn’t doing.

    In a situation such as mine, how does one approach letting go and being detached?

    • Letting go is having faith, trusting, and not worrying about the outcome. I think you’ve already identified how to be detached – stop focusing on what he is/isn’t doing, and focus on things that you like. There are other articles on this site about letting go.     Ok question about letting go when you are manifesting a relationship with a specific person. I am manfesting a relationship with a certain guy. I let go of all fears and worries. I am moving forward with the attitude of I trust it is coming to me, and I focus on creating things the way I want them to be with him.
    So when I read the article, does a person actually have to come right out and say they are ok with not having the relationship? Or is it just the attitude? It never occurred to me to think of anything other than succeeding. So a bit confused.

    • The attitude is sufficient. There’s no need to say it unless you feel so inclined.

    I recently found your site and have to say your law of attraction site is the best I have found. Very informative and easy to understand. I have been studying and applying the law of attraction for awhile.
    I read a law of attraction book by another author and there is no mention of letting go and being detached.

    They talked about thoughts and feelings. In the other book I read, they say if you have a negative thought change it right away to the exact opposite of the negative thought.
    To me that made no sense because when you do that it stirs up the negative thought and makes you think about it more. Which in turn caused me to have resistance as you call it. Learned that from your site and I see how that came about because if you have a negative thought and you immediately counter it with a positive that is the direct opposite well how can you let it go?

    Now reading on your site about letting go which makes more sense to me. To me letting go means letting the negative stuff just float out and forget about it. Get back to focusing on what I want and trust it is mine.

    If I do that will that negative stuff be created? Does it really have to be that if you think a negative thought you have to immediately counter it with the direct positive?

    • Thanks Linda! I’m glad my site has helped you.

      The simplest answer is that things are only created based upon how much energy you give to them. This goes for both positive and negative things. So it really comes down to your predominate thoughts and feelings. If you’re negative 51% of the time, you can manifest negative things.

      The more you work with the Law of Attraction, the cleaner your vibration becomes and it’s easier for instantaneous manifestations to occur. By this time, you’ve probably shifted most of your resistance and limiting beliefs, and are quite aware of what you are projecting via your thoughts and feelings. So even though you could create something negative quickly, you’re not likely to do so because you have a heightened awareness.

      • That makes sense. Thank you!
        What happened with me is the book I read tells you if you have a negative thought, you need to immediately change that thought to an exact positive in order to negate the negative.

        Which in me created anxiety and worry and a feeling of having to do this perfectly to manifest. Every time I immediately countered the negative with the exact positive thought, it created more negative thoughts. To me it was as though my mind was playing a game because I was doing that.

        I am seeing from your site that you don’t have to be perfect or control thoughts with an iron rod. Since finding your site I have been trying to undo all of this. Trying to quiet my mind mostly by ignoring it – taking the energy away from it.

        I don’t remember where on your site I read it but there was a response you gave to some one else about ignoring negative thoughts in order to let them go.
        When you ignore them and let them go what do you do after they stop? Do you just forget about them and jump back into good thoughts?

        • I believe the technique you’re describing was posted by someone else. It’s something the person posting was experimenting with. You can try it and see if it works for you. The success rate will vary person-to-person based on the issue and what is causing it. If the thoughts don’t go away and continue to cause problems, the underlying source of the belief/thought needs to be resolved.

  29. Hello, thank you for all the information you have provided me with. It’s has helped me a great deal! I do however have a question. I’m using the LOA to attract a specific person. Your book says to live your life as though you are already in the relationship, to let it be the viewpoint from which you live your life. Do things you would do if you already had the relationship. So if other guys ask me out on dates should I say no? If I was in this relationship I wouldn’t be dating other guys. Do you know what I mean?

  31. I really love your articles and site. I have been reading over all the comments on Letting go. From my viewpoint it seems as though so many find it hard to detach from the outcome.
    I want to share what I did because it worked. Rather than spend all my time trying to be detached from the outcome, I decided to let go of any worries and focus on the outcome I wanted. Instead of wondering if I was detached from the outcome, I took the viewpoint of what I want is mine. I just changed my thoughts to what I want and trusted it was mine.
    I stopped wondering if I was detached, and just looked at it as mine already. I don’t know if that is considered actual detachment, but it has worked for me several times. I feel the key there was that I refused to worry any more.
